How we work

Methodology and sources

By the HeatAndAirCost editors · Last updated September 1, 2026 · How we research prices

HeatAndAirCost publishes researched 2026 cost ranges for home HVAC repairs and replacements, alongside plain-English guides for common furnace and AC problems. This page explains where the numbers come from and, just as important, what they are not.

Where our numbers come from

Every dollar range on this site is compiled from published cost research by established home-services publishers, primarily HomeGuide, Fixr, This Old House, and Thumbtack. We restate their figures as ranges and cite the specific page next to the number. We do not collect or invent our own pricing, and we do not present any figure as a quote.

How we verify sources

Before publishing, we check that each source URL resolves for a real reader. We deliberately exclude pages that block ordinary visitors so that every citation you click actually opens. When a publisher updates its figures, we update ours and change the “last updated” date on the page.

The honest limits of a price range

A national range tells you whether a quote is roughly fair. It cannot tell you your exact price. Real costs depend on your equipment, the failed part, your local labor rates, permit fees, and access to the unit. Only a licensed contractor who inspects your system can give you an actual price. Use our ranges to walk into that conversation informed, then read how to choose a contractor and get at least three written quotes.

Our byline and independence

Content is written and maintained by the HeatAndAirCost editors. We do not publish invented author personas, testimonials, star ratings, or stock “expert” headshots. We are an independent cost-research publisher operated by Kindred Works LLC, we are not a contractor, and we take no payment from you. See our disclosure for how the site is funded and our about page for who runs it.
